A domain name is your personal or your company’s name on the Internet. It’s how people find you from across the globe.
Domain Names and URLs
The universal resource locator, or URL, is an entire set of directions, and it contains extremely detailed information. The domain name is one of the pieces inside of a URL. It is also the most easily recognized part of the entire address. When computer users type a web address directly into the field at the top of their browser window, it initiates a process of locating the page requested. To do so, the instructions contained inside the URL, including the domain name, must correctly point to that location. The IP address is a numerical code that makes this possible.
Domain names are formed by the rules and procedures of the Domain Name System (DNS). Any name registered in the DNS is a domain name. To register your domain name, it involves registering the name you want with an organisation called ICANN through a domain name registrar. The registrar has a tool to offer that lets you find out if the name you want is available on the Internet and if not, then choose using alternate names. Select the time period you would like to own the name. Domains are renewed on a yearly or multi-yearly basis. And depending on the .extension (such as .com, .net, .info), the price will vary.
Once you’ve selected the domain, the period and checked that it’s available, then you can proceed to checkout. Enter your payment details and you’re ready to go! You will receive an email with the details of your order. Once your domain is booked you will own that name on the Internet for the time period you chose. Before the end of the period you will receive an email from the registrar, informing you about the upcoming expiry of your domain. Please note that registrars require a registration before a purchase.
